UX Case Study - Gamification

HANGTIME (Kiswe)

HANGTIME was a social media app centered around co-watching media chatrooms (“Hangs”) and live content for young adults. I was brought in after a freelancer established the dark look and feel that was more appropriate of a youth media entertainment app.

HANGTIME / Achievements / GAMIFICATION

To incentivize community building and app usage, we designed a preliminary but comprehensive reputation and gamification system rewarding in-and-out of app (referrals) user behavior. Freelancer illustrated badges and titles were custom made to apply to a variety of user behaviors shown publicly on User Profiles and inside chatrooms.

Gamified Achievement award progress were publicly displayed on User Profiles but also in chatrooms, denoting seniority (not unlike Reddit). To further promote the app, Achievements were publishable on all major social media platforms to gain organic user growth.

This gamification/reputation system has different challenges in a fully social app, bringing competitiveness with other users and “one-upmanship”. Used privately, it visually shows progress at a glance, gives easily understood earned authority to oneself and in conversation with others who use the app.

Not unlike a martial arts belt or military ranking but friendlier, the challenge is to make a thriving and fulfilling sense of achievement running through the app experience in a subtler, more wholesome way - rewarding appropriate actions and using appropriate imagery, names, and titles that push the user forward on their user journeys.

Designed interactive Multilingual User Engagement Widget for Olympics.com for Tokyo and Beijing Olympics. Global users would cheer for their athletes with realtime visual user data. Over 5 million user interactions recorded.


Choosii / Social collectors app

Came in to fix UI/UX and creative for fledging Collectors social app, Choosii, empowering collectors of anything to socialize, showcase & sell from their collections.

KISWE GAMEDAY / 2nd Screen Player

Designed interactive Multilingual User Engagement Sites for NBA, NHL, NFL, PGA and other sports leagues. Global users would cheer, chat and shop during games with realtime user data.

PPV.COM / Pay Per View

Designed responsive and multilingual web UI, 10ft TV and mobile app for PPV.COM’s Livestreaming player.  

VidGo TV / multi-device STreaming Service

A low cost streaming service, with built in On Demand and 48 hour DVR. Did all the UI/UX work for the mobile app, web app, and 10ft TV experiences. Art Directed the website and app store imagery.

Oh!Live / Social Music & Video Player

Designed interactive concert live-streaming mobile app for K-Pop label BigHit (now Hybe).

Rhapsody / International music streaming

Creative and Product direction for rebranded Rhapsody Music Service (now Napster 2.0).

VIACOM + MTV NETWORKS / MULTI-DEVICE MEDIA ON DEMAND APPS

Designed web Streaming apps for Viacom media channels, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon, and CMT.
